Małgorzata Walewska is quickly becoming one of the world’s leading dramatic mezzo sopranos, enjoying an international career in opera and concert. This season she will be heard at the Deutsche Oper Berlin in the title role of Gnecchi’s Cassandra , followed by Maddalena in Lisbon and Washington, and Mahler’s Resurrection Symphony with the Warsaw Philharmonic. Upcoming seasons bring her to the Royal Opera House Covent Garden as Azucena in Il trovatore , to Seattle as both Amneris is Aida and as Judith in Bluebeard’s Castle , to the San Francisco Opera as Azucena, and to Baltimore as Amneris.
Miss Walewska’s 2006-2007 season was marked by her debut at the New National Theater in Tokyo as Eboli in Don Carlos , followed by the Countess in The Queen of Spades at the Polish National Opera in Warsaw and her return to the United States as Fenena in Nabucco in Baltimore. After returning to Warsaw for a New Year’s Eve Gala, she made her house debut at the Hawaii Opera Theater with a new production of Samson et Dalila , returned to Warsaw as Amneris in Aida , and closed the season as Carmen at the Savonlinna Festival.
Miss Walewska made her Metropolitan Opera debut in 2005 in the title role of Samson et Dalila opposite tenor Jose Cura. She returned to the Metropolitan as Amneris in Aida and was heard as Dalila in the Met in the Parks, followed by Amneris in Aida and Santuzza at the Savonlinna Festival. Shortly after making her operatic debut in 1991 on the stage of the Polish National Opera, Miss Walewska was engaged at the Vienna Stata Opera where she was heard as Carmen, Maddalena in Rigoletto, Olga in Eugene Onegin, and Pierotto in Linda di Chamounix. Other European opera credits include the Teatro della Opera in Rome, the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Semperoper in Dresden, Las Palmas, Luxemburg, Palm Beach Opera, Helsinki, and Graz, with performances of Santuzza in Cavalleria rusticana, Charlotte in Werther, La Cieca in La Giaconda, Ulrica in Un Ballo in Maschera, Fenena in Nabucco, Dame Quickly in Falstaff, Emilia in Otello, Paulina in Pique Dame, Judith in Bluebeard’s Castle, and Jocasta in Odipus Rex. Recent seasons have taken her to opera festivals in Brussels, Seville, London, Bregenz, Nantes, and Athens.
Miss Walewska was awarded 1st Prize in the Alfredo Kraus 2nd International Competition in Las Palmas and Second Prize in the 1st International Academic Vocal Competition in Wroclaw. She was honored as Best Mezzo Soprano at the Luciano Pavarotti's Vocal Competition in Philadelphia and the Moniuszko International Competition in Warsaw and was a finalist of the Belvedere Competition in Vienna.
In addition to her operatic career, Miss Walewska is an accomplished concert singer. Her concert repertoire includes the Verdi Messa da requeim, Rossini’s Stabat Mater and Petite Messe Solennelle, Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater, J.S. Bach’s Magnificat, the Ninth Symphony of Beethoven, the Symphonies No. 2 and 3 of Mahler, Mozart’s Coronation Mass, and Bruckner’s Te Deum.
Miss Walewska has a growing discography. Her latest solo album Panta Rhei on Dux Records was preceded by a solo album of arias on Sony Classical entitled Voce di Donna, the Sony Music Poland CD Mezzo [Songs And Arias In Contemporary Arrangements], the Sony Music Poland CD release of Ave Maria [Christian songs], and the sound track for the movie Quo Vadis.
