American Mezzo-Soprano Marianna Kulikova opened the 2006-2007 season as Adalgisa in Norma for L’Opéra de Nice and debuted Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde with the Grammy Award-winning Flint Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Enrique Diemecke. In the past two seasons she made her Amsterdam debut in Prokofieff’s Love for Three Oranges, was Elisabetta in the Geneva production of Maria Stuarda, was in Munich for the role of the Foreign Princess in Rusalka with the Bayerische Rundfunksorchester, made her debut at the Canadian Opera Company in Toronto as Adalgisa in Norma, was Lola in Pagliacci at the Dallas Opera, returned to the Savonlinna Festival as Giulietta in Les Contes d’Hoffmann , and was in Saarbrücken for Verdi’s Messa da Requiem under the baton of Marcello Viotti. Future engagements for Miss Kulikova include her debut as Romeo in Bellini’s I Capuletti e i Montecchi at the Florentine Opera, and her role debut as Orlofsky at the Dallas Opera.
In the 2003-2004 season Miss Kulikova debuted at the Salzburg Festival with Riccardo Muti in Cherubini’s Messa Solemnis, premiered Jean Francaix’ L’Apocalypse Selon Saint Jean with the Bayerische Rundfunkorchester and debuted with the Göteberg Symphony Orchestra in Rossini’s Stabat Mater both under the baton of Maestro Marcello Viotti. She then debuted as the soloist in Ivan the Terrible with the Collegiate Chorale at Carnegie Hall, and at the Savonlinna Festival as Giulietta in Offenbach’s Les Contes d’Hoffmann.
In earlier seasons Miss Kulikova sang the title roles of Carmen and Armide by Gluck at the Luzernertheater in Switzerland, where she has also sung the role of Giuditta in Betulia Liberata by Mozart, was Fenena in Nabucco in St. Gallen, Switzerland and Hänsel in a Teatro San Carlo di Napoli production of Hänsel und Gretel, and performed the role of Marguerite in Hector Berlioz’s Damnation of Faust in Palermo, Romeo in Bellini’s Capuleti e Montecchi at the Ravenna Festival, and the title role in Bizet’s Djamileh in Todi, Italy. For two consecutive seasons, she was soloist in the Messiah at San Francisco’s Davies Symphony Hall.
Miss Kulikova can be heard in a recording of Vivaldi’s l’Olimpiade under the direction of Rinaldo Alessandrini. She also performed Sheherazade by Ravel at the Villa San Michele in Capri and Shostakovich’s Eleven Hebrew Songs with the Boston Philharmonic. Other concert repertoire includes Les Trois Poemes de Stephan Mallarme and Chansons Madecasses by Ravel, Les Nuites d’Ete by Berlioz and the Kindertotenlieder and Ruckertlieder by Mahler.
In 1995 Miss Kulikova made her Italian debut at the Spoleto Festival dei Due Mondi in the opening concert of Bruckner’s Te Deum and in the role of the Baroness in The Nose by Shostakovich. She has performed for two consecutive seasons at the Teatro Regio of Torino in l’Orfeo by Monteverdi and Tamerlano by Händel. She then debuted at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino in Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk under the direction of Semyon Bychkov. Ms. Kulikova has appeared in the roles of La Maestra and Bianca Neve in the modern opera Una Favola Per Caso at the Teatro Massimo in Palermo where she returned the following year for her Italian debut in the title role in La Cenerentola under the direction of Gabriele Ferro. In the summer of 2001. Miss Kulikova returned the following summer, for the closing concert in honor of the victims of September 11 under the direction of Maestro Riccardo Muti. This concert was repeated at Avery Fischer Hall.
Upon graduation from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music in 1993, Miss Kulikova was invited to the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia where she debuted the roles of Dorabella in Così fan tutte, Olga in Eugene Onegin and Hänsel in Hänsel und Gretel.
Born in Kiev, Marianna Kulikova moved to Chicago with her family at the age of six. She began her musical studies at the Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan.
