
In 2003 Rafael Davila made his Italian debut at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples as Riccardo in Verdi’s Un ballo in Maschera. For the New Zealand Opera he appeared as Don Jose in Carmen and Alfredo in La traviata. With the Sarasota Opera in Florida he has sung the title role in Werther, as well as Canio in Pagliacci, Turiddu in Cavalleria Rusticana and Foresto in Verdi’s Attila. For Opera de Puerto Rico Mr. Davila has sung the roles of Pinkerton in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, Rinuccio in Gianni Schicchi, and Alfredo in La Traviata. For the Fundacion de Zarzuela y Opereta de Puerto Rico he sang Alfredo in Strauss’ Die Fledermaus as well as Leonardo in the Cuban zarzuela Cecilia Valdés, Javier in Luisa Fernanda and Camille in The Merry Widow. Future engagements include his return to Sarasota Opera this season to sing the Duke in Rigoletto, followed by Calaf in Turandot for Connecticut Grand Opera, Verdi’s Missa da Requiem with the Colorado Symphony, and Pollione in Norma for Opera de Puerto Rico.
Mr. Davila has also appeared with the Fort Worth Opera, Opera Roanoke, San Antonio Opera, Opera Tampa, Connecticut Grand Opera, Teatro de la Opera de Puerto Rico and Austin Lyric Opera as Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly, the Duke of Mantua in Rigoletto, Cassio in Otello, Alfredo in La Traviata, andNarraboth in Salome, among others. Mr. Dávila sang the Mozart’s roles of Tamino in Die Zauberflöte and Belmonte in Die Entführung aus dem Serail in Salzburg, Steyr and Attersee.
His concert experience includes Berlioz’ Beatrice et Benedict, Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde, and Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with the Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra. He has also sung Mozart’s Coronation Mass with soprano June Anderson and in Estevez’ Cantanta Criolla with the The Seattle Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Gerard Schwarz. Other works in his repertoire include Rossini’s Stabat Mater, Mozart’s Requiem, Handel’s Messiah, Bach’s Magnificat, Charpentier’s Messe de Minuit pour Noel and Magnificat, Misa Criolla and Navidad Nuestra by Ariel Ramírez, and the world premieres of Misa Jíbara by Nicolás Aponte and Anglican Requiem by Ignacio Morales Nieva. His recording of Misa Criolla was nominated for a Grammy Award.
