In recent seasons American soprano Gywnne Geyer has been heard in a variety of roles on the great stages of the world.  These include her La Scala debut under the baton of Riccardo Muti as Madame Lidoine in Les Dialogues des Carmelites, which was released on DVD in 2007, her debut at the 2008 Glyndebourne Festival as Lady Billows in Albert Herring, and Ellen Orford in Peter Grimes in Barcelona.  Her debut in the title role of Ariadne auf Naxos for the Spoleto USA Festival The Wall Street Journal reported as having: “elegance to spare…Spoleto was fortunate in its Ariadne, a role that can be just as tedious as the commedia characters insist.  Gwynne Geyer has a big, gleaming soprano with effortless high notes, and she shaped her long laments with musical elegance.” 

Other recent international performances of Miss Geyer include Madame Lidoine in Poulenc’s Les Dialogues des Carmelites at the Teatro Real in Madrid and the New York City Opera, Elsa in Lohengrin in Madrid, Mahler’s Symphony No 8 with the National Orchestra of Mexico in the Palacio de Bellas Artes, and Strauss’ Vier letzte Lieder in Barcelona and Madrid with the Spanish National Youth Orchestra.

Since 2000 Miss Geyer has been heard as Musetta in La Bohème for the Metropolitan Opera, Jenufa at La Fenice in Venice, Rusalka at the Seattle Opera, the title role of Katya Kabanova and Musetta at the Paris Opera Bastille, Madame Lidoine at the Netherlands Opera in Amsterdam, Freia in Das Rheingold in Madrid, Elsa in Lohengrin at the Liceu in Barcelona, and the title role of Jenufa at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples which was reported in London’s monthly Opera: “Gwynne Geyer as Jenufa herself added yet another superb characterization to her gallery…and singing with that distinctive vocal timbre of hers that conveys (especially at the top) a kind of ecstatically painful sincerity.”

Early career highlights for the soprano have include performances at the Metropolitan Opera as Rosalinde in Die Fledermaus, the title role of Rusalka, Nedda in I pagliacci, Marguerite in Faust, Eva in Die Meistersinger, and Marenka in The Bartered Bride.  Miss Geyer made her Vienna State Opera debut as Antonia in Les Contes d’Hoffmann, was heard at the Arena di Verona as both Micaela and Mimi, and debuted Violetta in La Traviata at the Canadian Opera Company.  Miss Geyer has sung the title role of Jenufa in Amsterdam, Cinncinnati and Toronto, Marenka in The Bartered Bride in Geneva, and Toronto, the title role in the Santa Fe Opera premiere of Countess Mariza, Mila Valkova in Janacek’s Osud with the VARA in Amsterdam, and a critically acclaimed portrayal of Galina Vishnevskaja in Marcel Landoswki’s Galina with Opéra National de Lyon.  Miss Geyer made her professional operatic debut at the New York City Opera as Nedda in I Pagliacci.

Gwynne Geyer has appeared in concert and recording of Mahler’s Symphony No. 8 with the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic with conductor Edo de Waart on BMG, performances and telecast of Rossini’s Messa di Gloria at the Bergen Festival in Norway, and in Britten’s War Requiem with John Nelson conducting.  Miss Geyer has appeared in concert with the Philadelphia Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Montreal Symphony, Cleveland Orchestra, the National Symphony Orchestra, St. Louis Symphony, and the Minnesota Orchestra.
